Happy International Credit Union Day!
Each year, on the third Thursday in October, credit unions across the globe celebrate International Credit Union Day! This day highlights the active role credit unions play in the financial wellness of communities across the globe and reflects the importance of its history and principals.
In honor of International Credit Union Day, here are four fun facts about credit unions.
- All credit unions are member-owned. That means, the decisions we make are centered around the best interests of our members.
- Credit unions are not-for-profit financial institutions where profits are returned to members through lower fees, competitive loan rates and better savings rates.
- All members of a credit union share a connection. So, you could join a credit union based on your employer, family, geographic location or membership in a group. Educators Credit Union’s membership is open to anyone who lives or works in Dane, Green, Jefferson, Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Rock, Walworth, Washington or Waukesha Counties.
- Credit unions are dedicated to serving local communities. Some examples of community support include fundraising, volunteering, and giving back to the community. Each year, Educators provides free financial literacy to students and adults, gives $70,000 in scholarships to graduating high school seniors, and donates to small businesses in the local community.
