Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!

National Hispanic Heritage Month Graphic

The United States is home to a multitude of cultures, nationalities, ethnicities and languages as diverse and plentiful as the people who inhabit it. To honor America’s diversity, we will recognize the history, culture and achievements of different communities all year, and between September 15 and October 15, we will celebrate the Hispanic community. Here are three facts about the history of Hispanic Heritage Month.

  1. In 1968, Hispanic Heritage Month began as only a week celebration, and in 1988, the celebration was legally expanded to 30 days.
  2. September 15 honors the independence of Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico celebrates independence on September 16, and Chile celebrates independence on September 18.
  3. Hispanic Heritage Month honors the histories, cultures and achievements of those with heritage from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

Educators Credit Union is proud to join the celebration of honoring the Hispanic community.
