The Importance of Keeping Your Contact Information Current

There’s nothing more annoying than pop-ups in apps or websites! Just about everyone can agree that their instinct is to close them as quickly as possible and move on. However, a quick glance could make a difference in the security of your accounts across the board. Some sites, like Educators, send you these pop-ups when you login once or twice a year to ensure that your contact information is current and correct. Why is this important?
MAILING ADDRESS
Your sensitive information is enclosed in anything that is mailed to you, whether it’s from a financial institution, insurance company or the Social Security Administration. Even if you sign up for paperless statements or notices, financial institutions mail you new cards upon expiration. The card won’t be delivered if your address is incorrect, and you’ll have to visit a branch for a new card. So, if you’ve moved in the past year, make sure you update your address in your important accounts to ensure the safety of your information, identity and finances.
EMAIL ADDRESS
If you’re signed up for paperless statements and notices, confirming your email address is up to date is essential. When you receive balance or transaction alerts, email could be one of your first lines of defense against potential fraud. Important notifications will be emailed to you, such as loan specials and important account updates. So, if you create a new email or an email becomes compromised, make sure to update it on your accounts ASAP.
PHONES & MULTI-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION
A second layer of defense to protect your information and money is to ensure you have multi-factor authentication (MFA) set up. Oftentimes, MFA is a text or phone call to your cell phone number. So, it’s extremely important to make sure you update your accounts if your phone number changes. If you ever need to reset your password or login from a new device, you’ll need that MFA access. Remember: When working with a company or organization, be cautious when giving out or entering your MFA codes. Always verify who you are working with before providing codes. If you are ever in doubt, hang up and call the number on the official website.
ULTIMATELY, IT KEEPS YOU IN CONTROL
