More Detailed Information

AM I ELIGIBLE FOR AN HSA?

Eligibility to establish an HSA is determined on a monthly basis, based on HDHP status as of the first of the month. If HDHP coverage begins mid-month, the Health Savings Account will be established and open on the first day of the month following the month HDHP coverage began.

WHY HAVE AN HSA?

An HSA is exclusively used for paying qualified medical expenses when you participate in a *high deductible health plan (HDHP). Use it for current health expenses or save for future qualified health expenses.

WHAT ARE QUALIFIED MEDICAL EXPENSES?

Tax-free, penalty-free withdrawals can be made if funds are used for certain qualified medical expenses. Generally, this includes most medical, dental and vision expenses that are defined in IRS Publication 502. This can also include qualified medical expenses for your spouse and children. Non-qualified distributions of HSAs are subject to taxation and a 20 percent federal penalty unless the HSA owner is age 65 or older, dies or is disabled.[1] It is the account owner’s responsibility to keep all receipts.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF AN HSA?

You are in control of the account — make contributions to it in any amount (up to contribution limits), at any time, and the funds roll over from year to year. Your HSA is completely portable, meaning you can keep the account even if you change jobs, change your medical coverage or become unemployed. Out-of-pocket contributions are tax-deductible and HSA earnings are tax-deferred. If used for qualified medical expenses, HSA assets are tax-free.[1]
