On Saturday May 20, Educators Credit Union celebrated former CEO and president, Eugene Szymczak’s life alongside the community at Gateway Technical College in Racine. The SC Johnson Student Life Center was filled with Gene’s family, friends, co-workers and tables full of organizations that Gene was passionate about for a non-profit expo. As the expo came to a close, everyone took a rainy walk down a path to a new bench at Samuel Myers Park in Gene’s honor. Members of the community and Educators Credit Union said a few words at the bench before current CEO, Linda Hoover, and our board cut a ribbon to open the bench to the community.
The bench perfectly encompasses Gene. Gene, being a lover of architecture and a Frank Lloyd Wright fan, bought the Thomas P. Hardy House in 2012, which he then restored and redesigned. Designer Eric O’Malley kept this in mind when creating the bench to represent Gene’s style accurately. The bench consists of “L” shaped cantilevered seats anchored to a geometric multi-level setting facing Gene’s home and Lake Michigan for a breathtaking view. Surrounding the bench is beautiful greenery, shrubs and flowers. Gene’s memorial bench was commissioned by Educators Credit Union, the YMCA, Kids First Fund, and the United Way of Racine County.
We are so grateful for those who took the time to come visit the non-profit expo and the bench to honor Gene. Please take some time and visit the bench to remember Gene and all he did for the community.
