Learning lessons on vacation!

If you are ever blessed with an opportunity to travel overseas or visit a foreign country, you have to embrace it. I just returned from a 12-day trip to Italy with my family and it was truly amazing. It was a trip of a lifetime – one that myself and my children will never forget.

Life is definitely much simpler where I was, less hectic for sure. The food, the stores — even the laundry! — was all amazing. All the food was so fresh – and it tasted SO good. Everything did – tomatoes, pasta, cheese, and herbs. It took longer to boil the water for the pasta than to actually cook it! I couldn’t help but eat everything in sight because it was all so wonderful. And the gelato – yum! I think we had gelato every day!

The grocery store chain, called the “Coop” (pronounced co-op), reminded me of our Aldi stores. It was a small, condensed store that had one or two brands of everything that you needed. Certainly, it’s not like our Pick ’n Save or Woodman’s that has 14 different brands of yellow mustard. I was able to fill my cart full of groceries and be in and out in thirty minutes. That rarely happens when I am shopping at home.

When we first arrived at our rented villa, the woman in charge gave us a tour. She showed us where the washer was. I questioned where the dryer was and I was given a funny look. She responded with, “Oh we just hang our clothes,” and pointed to the drying racks in the room. I was thinking to myself, “What in the world? The laundry is going to take forever.”

When the washer was done, I took the clothes and hung them on the balconies outside and the clothesline in the yard. To my surprise, the clothes dried SUPER fast outside. And they smelled so good! I started noticing that everyone hung their clothes outside there. Everywhere we went, we would pass houses and apartments with clothes hanging outside to dry.

I’m hooked. I told my husband I want a clothesline set up in the back yard for Mother’s Day. I can’t wait to line dry our clothes and sheets this summer. Not only will it save on my electricity bill but the clothes will last longer and smell fantastic. All in all, it’s a win-win for me.
